Artist’s Statement

When I was a child, I enjoyed climbing trees and sitting in the tops of them swaying in the breeze. I’d go down to the creek and watch the pollywogs turn into frogs.

All of my work deals with nature--abstract realism that sometimes pushes toward the completely abstract. I'm interested in the transformation of objects by natural processes or the interaction of objects/water/light. I want people to do a double-take, take a second look because they're not quite sure what they are seeing. I believe the metamorphosis of the ordinary into the mysterious helps us view things in a new way.

Photography reconnects me to my child-like sense of wonder and pleasure in the outdoors. There's a lot of juice there: the excitement of play, learning, experimentation. It also makes me stop and look more closely at the details of the natural world. I see more. I shoot whatever attracts my attention, whether conventionally beautiful or not.

Images that leap out at me have to do with elemental forces, particularly water and the interaction of water and earth. I think of metal and stone as representative of earth. I also favor saturated colors, vibrant orange or red or blue. These I find in unlikely places--as many of these pieces illustrate.
